Mille Terrae Races and Governments
The Histaaki
The Histaaki evolved on a planet far from earth, from avian creatures that resembled ancient terran reptiles. They tend to value science above everything else: their
society is based on the laws of science and they consider religion a terrible ignorance. As a culture they have vowed to destroy it. The technology of the Histaaki
differs from those of the governments around them, but it is no less sophisticated. Their genious lies more in the study and application of the biological
sciences than other species. The power and sophistication they have brought to this field of knowledge is demonstrated by the devestrating biological weapons
they use in orbital bombardments. The Histaaki are currently at war with the Soldor Maltherane and the border between the two civilizations is scattered with worlds denuded
by the results of these terrible weapons. Histaaki are skilled fighter pilots and in space combat, they make extensive use of this trait, deploying a vast array of powerful fighters and few, but very powerful, warships.
The Maltherane
The Maltherane are an ancient race, older then they themselves can remember. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years ago, the Maltherane ruled a vast empire, stretching into what later became Histaaki, Cypien, and Human space. This empire, however, fell about 500 to 750 years before Mille Terrae begins. Since the empire fell, 2 fractions of the Maltherane have risen: The Soldor and the Tinirion. Divided by religion, these factions wage a bloody civil war among themselves. But not all of the Maltherane's troubles come from inside. From the south, the Histaaki are invading Soldor space. To the West, the Cypiens are making war against the Tinirion. It is unclear how much longer the Maltherane can last.
The Cypiens
Cypiens are not so much a government as a society of technologically altered humans. Their popular name comes from the scientific term they use to describe themselves: they are Homo cypiens, the next step in the evolution of humanity, or so they claim. They fled the persecution they experienced in the more
densely populated regions of the galaxy. By leaving the older human worlds, they also avoided strict laws governing the use of humans as experimental subjects. Now, the cypiens live in a scattered collection of star systems on the unexplored frontier of space. This loose confederation of settlements maintains
its common character not as the result of any centralized government, but because they all submit to the influence of common standards of technology, large corporations, and organized crime syndicates.
The Obrenai
Obrenaïa is a stellar nation ruled by a socialist government. Their technology is utilitarian, and their economy is centered around heavy industry. They are not very war-like but will fight off threats to their social integrity with military force. Their territory lies on the galactic fringe and borders to Arvadian and Cypiens space. Armed conflicts with Arvadian raiders are common in the zone between the two territories.
The Arvadians
After warring for centuries among themselves, the people of Arvadia know nothing but how to fight. A popular cliché says, "death comes, but only in battle."
They believe strongly in the pursuit of war, making their presence known during any conflict, throughout the galaxy. Rather nosy at times, they make a habit of
getting into other peoples' confilcts, usually crippling all sides in the process. No government controls this people, for governments and rules were destroyed
decisively in the Arvadian's past wars. They are, in essence, free roaming pirates who look to fight constantly. They are a free-roaming species which is trying
to gather up its power and form a stable Empire. On the other hand, many of the famous warriors and space pirates of this race scorn the concept of empire. Problems arise.
The Legacy of Earth
The Legacy of Earth is what was left after the initial migration from Earth. Those humans who stayed behind after the exodus of the previous century
eventually destroyed Earth's environment, leaving the planet desolate, incapable of supporting the diversity of life it once housed. Now, the home world sustains
no more than a few million inhabitants and the decline continues even now. So the Terrans were finally forced to emmigrate into space. They colonized the
closest cluster of systems but they found their expansion limited by older, more powerful governments who surrounded them on almost all sides. Only the
galactic Southeast was uncolonized. At this point in history, the Terrans split in two. One faction stopped exploring and stayed in the systems closest to Earth,
forming the federation now called the Legacy of Ancient Earth. The other continued to expand in the direction of galactic Southeast until they encountered the Histaaki. These former citizens of earth became the independant human worlds, the homes of huge merchant corporations, and, of course, pirates.
The Scrappers
A race of salvagers, engineers, and builders, the Salvagers make their living finding, scrapping, and refiting disabled ships. Often, the Scrappers will auction off weapons and equipment taken from disabled warships; these auctions often turn humerous, as one race tries to buy its secret technology back at an insane price rather then let the enemy get it. Such are the Scrappers. Their own ships, made from everything from Asteroids to scrap metal, are examples of their craftiness. Their planets, named after tools they use to make their living, are examples of their intelligence. The Scrappers are invaluable to the other races.
